What is Italian sushi? It’s a charcuterie board in sushi form! We couldn’t be more excited about this new trend because it’s fun to make and you can change up what’s inside to make different sushi variations. You can even give the rolls names like your favorite sushi spot does.
You’ll be saying OMG! because…
- It’s a new way to serve charcuterie. We all love a charcuterie board, but Italian sushi makes the experience more fun to eat.
- It’s a no-cook appetizer. Some people refer to it as prosciutto sushi because it takes the place of nori and keeps all the ingredients in place.
- It has lots of texture. Italian sushi is chewy and creamy, and our version includes crunch!
Premium Ingredients = Recipes that WOW
We know that when you are feeding the people you love, you want to give them the best. That’s why using the best ingredients in our recipes is so important to us. The things to focus on when making Italian sushi are:
The prosciutto. This Italian meat is the must have ingredient for Italian sushi. It is the layer on which the appetizer is built and what holds the sushi together once rolled.
Choose an authentic prosciutto for the best flavor and texture. Lower-quality options can be overly chewy or fatty, making the Italian sushi hard to eat.
The cheese. Use fresh mozzarella or burrata for the creamy filling in your Italian sushi. This will help the other fillings stay in place and add a nice texture to the appetizer. Again, a high quality cheese will have the flavor and texture you need for the best Italian sushi.
The pretzels. Not all Italian sushi calls for pretzels, but we like including our seasoned sourdough pretzel nuggets for flavor and crunch! Obviously our Garlic variety is the go-to option for this easy appetizer, but you could opt for any of our savory flavors. Since they are bite-sized, you can use the pretzel nuggets whole and cut the Italian sushi pieces to include one crunchy nugget.
How to Make Italian Sushi
Making Italian sushi is easy and fun.
- It starts with laying several slices of prosciutto on a board. Be sure to overlap them slightly.
- Add torn pieces of cheese on top and then add any veggies or condiments.
- Finally add our seasoned sourdough pretzel nuggets with enough space in between each one to slice the Italian sushi pieces.
- Serve on a platter or as part of a larger charcuterie board spread.
Pretzel-tastic Italian Sushi Variations
The Spicy Roll. Choose Buffalo OMG! Pretzels for this prosciutto sushi appetizer. Add a dash (or several) of hot sauce and some sliced banana peppers to kick the heat factor up.
The Citrus Roll. Lemon Pepper OMG! Pretzels and chopped candied orange slices give this Italian sushi idea tons of flavor and the perfect combination of sweet and savory.
The Sweet Roll. Add a thin layer of apricot jam between the prosciutto and the cheese. Then, use Sweet Chili OMG! Pretzels for the crunch factor that brings just enough heat to this Italian sushi to balance the sweet factor.
